The 2026 Census is coming!

On Tuesday, 11 August 2026, everyone in Australia must be counted.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is hiring over 30,000 people to help deliver the Census — including 130 Local Engagement Officer roles available from 5 January 2026, some right here in your council area!

Local Engagement Officers play a vital role in supporting diverse communities to complete the Census. We’re looking for people who are connected to their community and have experience working with:

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples

Culturally and linguistically diverse communities

People experiencing homelessness

People living with a disability

Youth or older Australians

Applications open 5 January 2026.
